Overview

Sometimes a song is more than just a melody—it’s a puzzle. Inspired by the haunting atmosphere of Haruki Murakami’s famous novel and the iconic 1965 track by The Beatles, this lesson invites students to become "lyrical detectives." "Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)" is famous for its ambiguous lyrics and mysterious ending. Students will dive into the 1960s vibe to figure out what really happened behind those closed doors: was it a simple breakup, a social commentary, or something much more literal and "fiery"?

Teacher’s Tip

The highlight of this lesson is the "reveal" on Slide 18. Students often have wild theories about the "fire" mentioned at the end of the song. Encourage the most creative speculations using the grammar targets before showing them the musicians' actual explanation. It’s a perfect way to turn a grammar point into a meaningful conversation!
